Holy mackerel, that photo looks familiar — but there's no 'ziti'

As soon as Ray Walter saw the pictures, they reminded him of perhaps the most famous – or infamous – fishing photo in the annals of New York State politics.

Walter, a Republican Assemblyman from Amherst, went fishing off the coast of Fort Myers, Fla., on Monday with his father, Raymond, and his son, Jack, 10.

They had a pretty good catch of mackerel, at least based on the two photos Walter posted on Twitter.

As Walter noted in his tweet, the photos featuring the classic "look at the fish we just hauled in" anglers' pose look just like the photo of ex-lobbyist Todd Howe and ex-Cuomo aide Joseph Percoco celebrating their catch on a 2010 fishing trip. That photo has gained notoriety as Percoco faces federal corruption charges, with Howe as a star witness.

Walter said he recognized the resemblance "immediately." He said he's not afraid this innocuous photo will come back to haunt him.

Besides taking his son and dad out fishing, Walter said, "There's no good back story."

And, he said, no appearance of the pasta dish that became shorthand for shady dealings in the trial.

"There was no ziti involved – any code words or anything," Walter said with a laugh.
