The state Department of Environmental Conservation announced Wednesday that no more remedial work is needed at an industrial site on Walmore Road in Wheatfield.
Ekonol Polyester Resins is located on the same parcel of land with the larger Saint Gobain Performance Plastics. In 1999, when Ekonol removed an underground concrete tank containing runoff from rinsing the floor at the resin plant, soil testing showed elevated levels of volatile organic chemicals, believed to be connected with degreasers used at the plant.
Contaminated soil around the tank was soon removed. In 2010, the DEC ordered installation of a system to keep toxic vapors from leaking into the Saint Gobain office. In 2011, work began on cleaning up the ground water with a combination of sand, gravel, wood chip mulch and injected vegetable oil.
