A 20-year-old Pennsylvania woman was killed Tuesday after the vehicle she was riding in was struck by a tractor-trailer at Exit 60 of the Thruway near Westfield, according to 1st Asst. Fire Chief Marsha Holland of the Westfield Volunteer Fire Department.
Holland said the woman was a passenger in a vehicle that rear-ended another vehicle.
The accident, which happened after 7 p.m., caused both vehicles to spin out to the side of the road, Holland said.
The driver of the vehicle had gone to check on the driver of the vehicle she had struck, when a semitractor-trailer crashed into her vehicle, killing the sole passenger inside, the woman's sister, Holland said.
"The girl said that she had rear-ended another vehicle, which caused both vehicles to spin out off to the side of the road. One of the females in the car went to go check on the guy and her sister was still in the car. The semi came and took out that vehicle," Holland said.
The name of the deceased woman was withheld.
The eastbound left lane of the Thruway, between Exits 59 and 60, had been closed to traffic, according to fire officials. The road is now open.
