Jeff Miers' Random Thoughts: The Playlist

A sampling of the best new (and new-ish) music that I'm listening to this week.

Sonar with David Torn, "Vortex"

They call themselves a "minimalist progressive groove band." I call them awesome. No streaming – you've gotta pay for music this good. (

N.E.R.D., "Lemon"

N.E.R.D.'s performance during the NBA All-Star Game halftime show was riveting and on-point, as is the funky and hyper-creative new album.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, "Beginner's Luck"

This Australian band has released six albums over the last 12 months. More significantly, they're all pretty stellar.

Kendrick Lamar, "Black Panther the Album: Music From and Inspired by the Film"

The film tore through attendance records like a hot knife through butter during its debut weekend. The album also is a scorcher.

MGMT, "Little Dark Age"

Dancy, druggy, beautifully produced and the best work the band has done since its 2007 debut, "Oracular Spectacular."
