A Buffalo man visiting relatives in Erie, Pa., for a birthday party was found dead on the ice in Presque Isle Bay early Saturday. He was identified as Thomas Fields, 65.
Erie County, Pa., Coroner Lyell Cook said Fields died of exposure after wandering from a relative's house late Friday evening and falling off a dock at the foot of Dobbins Landing, a tourist area by Presque Isle Bay, according to the Erie Times-News. Fields' body was found at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Erie police said a missing persons report was filed.
Based on surveillance footage from the Bicentennial Tower, Fields apparently became disoriented and fell from the dock around 6 a.m. The Times-News reported a passerby spotted Fields’ body face down on the ice and called 911 at 8:08 a.m. Erie police said “there doesn’t appear to be any foul play.”
