Wheelchair operator is critically injured in Tonawanda hit-and-run collision

A car stuck and critically injured a person operating a motorized wheelchair Friday afternoon in the Town of Tonawanda before the driver fled the scene, police said.

The incident happened at 5:50 p.m. along Vulcan Street near General Motors' engine plant, town police reported Saturday.

The vehicle struck the motorized wheelchair before fleeing the scene. The wheelchair operator, who was not identified by police, suffered possible head and chest injuries and was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment. The victim was in critical condition early Saturday.

A police statement doesn't say whether the wheelchair was in the roadway or on the side of the road when it was struck. Nor does it offer a description of the vehicle sought.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 879-6613. The confidential tip line number is 879-6606.
