Canisius hockey has a two-point lead for first place in the conference with four games to go, but it will be without two-thirds of its top line for another weekend.
The team confirmed Friday that senior captain Ryan Schmelzer (13 goals, 16 assists) and linemate Jeff Murray (3g, 14a) did not make the trip to Air Force due to upper-body injuries.
Schmelzer missed last weekend's series against Army West Point due to an injury picked up in the previous game. Murray was injured in the first game of the series after being hit from behind into the boards. Leading scorer Dylan McLaughlin, who entered last weekend tied for second nationally with 39 points, was kept off the scoresheet in the two-game series without his linemates.
Coach Trevor Large did not seem worried about either injury being long-term when asked about them last Friday: "He’s very day-to-day," Large said of Schmelzer. "He’ll be fine. He’ll be back in time, I’ll say, when we really need him. He’ll be 100 percent."
Canisius faces Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo., at 9:05 p.m Eastern time on Friday night and 7:05 p.m. Eastern Saturday. The Griffs close the regular season next weekend with a home-and-home series against Niagara (full standings here).
