Racket Sports: Williamsville's Miller Tennis Center earns worldwide recognition

When Todd and Debbie Miller established Miller Tennis Center in 2007, their goal was to turn the area’s largest year-round facility into one of the nation’s best.

Ten years later the couple has exceeded their goal.

Miller Tennis Center has been honored by the Professional Tennis Registry by being named PTR's "Private Tennis Facility of the Year" for 2018. PTR, founded by coach Dennis Van der Meer in 1976, is the largest global tennis organization in the world with over 16,000 members in 125 countries.

Previous winners of the award include Kiawah Island Resort in South Carolina, the Orchard at Mauna Lani in Hawaii, the Shanghai Racquet Club in China, Swept Away Resort in Jamaica, Casa de Campa in the Dominican Republic along with clubs in Mexico, Germany, Italy and other countries.

Todd Miller was presented the PTR award this past Tuesday in Hilton Head, S.C.,  during the PTR's International Tennis Symposium.

Brian Parkkonen, PTR's director of tennis, was impressed with the club after conducting a workshop there this past year.

"The Millers have established a world-class facility," Parkkonen said. "I was greatly impressed with the beauty of both the indoor and outdoor parts of the club. The facility’s wide range of programming and special events makes for a very active year-round traffic pattern. The pro staff is of the highest caliber and the center over the years has been a hub for PTR educational activities. Miller Tennis Center is very deserving of the PTR Private Facility of the Year Award."

"Debbie and myself were totally caught off guard when we received the news that our facility had won this amazing honor," Todd Miller said. "It was never on our radar and was a complete surprise. To have our facility even mentioned in the same breath with the outstanding list of past winners is truly astonishing. Since day one, our mindset has been to strive to deliver the very best we can in terms of facility, pro staff, programming and special events. Our goal has been to continually improve our product."

The Miller Tennis Center is located on 10 acres at 5959 Sheridan Dr. in Williamsville. The indoor and outdoor parts of the club are equally impressive – the club has eight indoor plexipave courts, with heating and air conditioning and outstanding LED lighting. Viewing indoor matches is very easy due to the spacious lounge area, while the club also offers massage therapy along with a pro shop, locker rooms and saunas.

The outdoor setting of 10 professionally maintained clay courts is nonpareil. The club also features a swimming pool and large patio areas with protective awnings for both players and spectators.

The staff at Miller consists of 18 PTR certified pros, including former ATP touring pro Marcus Fugate, who head up many private and group lessons at various levels. The academy has virtually every area high-performance student in its training program, while there are several adult programs.

"Witnessing the enjoyment our local tennis community has experienced while playing, participating in lessons, relaxing and spectating at our center, has been an extreme pleasure and at the same time, rewarding," Miller said.

"Debbie and I thank the PTR for this award and we’re very appreciative. However, it has always been a labor of love, and we’re just getting started."

"Due to Todd and my love for the game of tennis at an early age we have been fortunate to have put our dedication and passion into the tennis business," Debbie Miller said. "Our success would not have been possible without the support of our staff, club members and tennis community.”
