Grocery store proposed for East Ferry

The owner of the Ferry Express Mart on the East Side plans to more than double the size of the current store, if the Zoning Board of Appeals grants him five variances for side yards and parking.

Hani Abuhamra wants to construct a 5,225 square-foot addition to his current 1,724-square-foot retail store at 966 E. Ferry St., on 0.71 acres. That would allow him to expand his operation and services to the neighborhood by creating a full-time grocery store, to be called Ferry Avenue Market, according to his application to the city.

The board will consider his request Feb. 21.
