The body of an elderly woman was found Friday inside a burning house in Dunkirk, according to the Dunkirk Fire Department.
Dunkirk Fire Chief Michael Edwards released a statement that said firefighters responded to a call at about 2:31 p.m. for a fire at a home on Crooked Brook Drive.
Firefighters were alerted by a resident about a person with burns inside the home, the fire department said. Firefighters discovered a deceased elderly woman inside, Dunkirk Fire said. The fire was extinguished, the fire department reported.
The Dunkirk Police, Chautauqua County Fire Investigation and Chautauqua County coroner were also dispatched to the scene, Dunkirk Fire said.
Both the cause of the fire and cause of death of the woman remained under investigation, the fire department said.
The woman's name was withheld until notification of her family, Edwards said.
