Bad news, night owls. Wegmans will end overnight hours at three of its Buffalo Niagara grocery stores.
Locations at 1577 Military Road in Niagara Falls, 675 Alberta Drive in Amherst and 601 Amherst St. near Elmwood Avenue will no longer be open 24 hours starting next month.
"This will allow us to better align our employee resources with the times when the vast majority of our customers are shopping in those stores," said Michele Mehaffy, a Wegmans spokeswoman.
Beginning March 4, the stores will close from midnight to 6 a.m. It's possible that another store could cut its hours in the future if it makes sense for their business patterns, Mehaffy said, but the company has no plans for future closings right now.
"Bottom line, there are just too few employees and too few customers overnight, and it makes sense to operate more efficiently during the overnight hours," Mehaffy said.
Because most of Wegmans' competitors in its other markets in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Massachusetts are not open 24 hours, it does not keep its stores open overnight in those markets.
