The Stevenson Street Bridge in South Buffalo has been reopened after authorities determined that high water on Cazenovia Creek is receding, a Buffalo Fire dispatcher confirmed early Friday.
The fire dispatcher said shortly after midnight that the go-ahead to reopen the bridge was given by Don Polito, a city engineer, after it was observed that the water level had dropped by 3 feet. The bridge had been closed as a precaution early Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service canceled a flood watch for most of Western New York that previously had been posted through 4 p.m. Friday. The arrival of colder, drier air will reduce the chance of thawing and rainfall that prompted the watch.
Forecasters say there is a slight possibility of snow showers around midday and temperatures are expected to fall to the mid 20s by sundown.
