Former Sabre Derek Roy opens Olympics with three assists for Team Canada

Derek Roy, a Sabres first-round draft pick in 2001, had three assists as Canada opened play at the Winter Olympics with a 5-1 victory against Switzerland in Group A preliminary round play.

The Canadians jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period and led 4-0 after two periods.

Roy saw a total of 17:30 of ice time, which was third on the team.

Canada next plays against the Czech Republic at 10:10 pm. ET on Friday night.

Roy, 34, last played in the NHL in 2014-15 with the Edmonton Oilers and had been playing overseas since. He has been with Avangard Omsk and Traktor Chelyabinsk in the KHL this season with 22 points in 55 games combined.
