Monsignor Martin basketball teams have learned over the years to be wary of road games in the league no matter the records or rankings of the teams. One of those venues to be especially wary of is St. Francis.
No. 1 ranked and Monsignor Martin leader Canisius had that lesson brought home again Wednesday night. The Crusaders needed two overtimes to finally vanquish the Red Raiders, 77-72.
Canisius trailed by two at the half and led by one after three quarters in the tense struggle. The outside shooting of Dorion Ivey and Bo Sireika, who accounted for seven of the Raiders' nine three-point baskets, kept St. Francis on the trail of an upset.
Ivey finished with 21 points. Sireika had 19.
Ryan Bradley with 19 points was high man among four Canisius players in double figures. Austin James had 16, Jayce Johnson 14 and Nicholas MacDonald 10 for the Crusaders.
Median share title
Medina clinched a share of the Niagara-Orleans League boys basketball title, finishing its regular season league schedule with a 68-38 triumph over Akron on Senior Night.
Among the Mustangs seniors honored was Jalin Cooper, who added 19 points to the Medina career record total of 1,293. He now has 1,312 with one regular season game left against Orchard Park on Saturday before sectional playoffs.
O'Hara's streak keeps growing
Cardinal O'Hara honored three senior standouts and completed another undefeated Monsignor Martin Association regular season with a 72-55 victory over Sacred Heart Wednesday night.
The three seniors on the eight-girl O'Hara roster, Cierra Harrison, Kiara Johnson and Nickelle O'Neil, had their Senior Night tributes. Johnson had 17 points, O'Neil 14 and Harrison 9 in the victory.
Micaela Ryan had stood out in defeat with 24 points. O'Hara had a 60-32 lead going into the fourth quarter as the Hawks handed the Sharks their first league loss of the season.
O'Hara has won 86 straight games against Western New York opposition since a loss to Sacred Heart in the Monsignor Martin playoffs championship game at Canisius College March 1, 2013. The Hawks have gone undefeatee in seven straight league regular seasons. They finished with a 10-0 record in league play.
O'Hara (18-6, ranked No. 1 in the News Girls Large Schools poll will face a major test against No.2 ranked Williamsville South at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
NT star gets triple-double
Lindsey Piotrowski of North Tonawanda had 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Lumberjacks over CSAT, 48-38, in a Niagara Frontier League crossover game.
