An East Side church is seeking Common Council approval for construction of a two-story addition to its existing structure.
The two-phase project, estimated to cost $2.2 million, will allow the First Calvary Missionary Baptist Church at 467 William St. to provide religious services, community outreach, a soup kitchen, a computer lab and youth mentoring services, according to the church's application to the city.
The 1.33-acre site, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and William, sits across from a McDonald's restaurant and a Rite Aid pharmacy, with residential housing to the south and east. The proposed new sanctuary would seat 532, while the multipurpose room would seat 474, or 221 if tables were used.
The Buffalo Planning Board on Monday recommended approval by the Council.
