Sixth-grader charged with assault in incident involving other student

A 12-year-old boy was charged with second-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon after police said he cut a fellow sixth-grader in the hand with a pocket knife Monday morning aboard a Buffalo school bus.

The boy's name is not being released because he is being charged as a minor, police said.

A school district spokesman said the incident happened just before 9 a.m. on a bus that was bound for Hillery Park Elementary. The driver of school bus No. 559 pulled over near Clinton Street and Fillmore Avenue, where police and firefighters were called.

The victim, a girl, was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital where she is awaiting medical attention, said district spokeswoman Elena Cala. The girl's mother was with her at the hospital, along with district chief operating officer Kevin Eberle.
