A would-be robber, wearing what appeared to be a painted-on, half-face mask, fled empty handed from a Niagara Falls store Saturday afternoon after a cashier thought the holdup attempt was a joke.
A cashier at a Dollar Tree store on Portage Road told police he was cashing out several customers shortly before 6 p.m. when a man walked in the front door wearing a mask. The man put a folding knife to the cashier's neck and said "give me the money," according to a police report. Noting the cracked, "painted-on" appearance of the "mask," the cashier said he thought the suspect was joking, and glanced toward another employee for confirmation.
At that point, the would-be robber fled the store on foot.
Police are hoping that store surveillance video will provide some clues to the identity of the suspect.
