Letter: Religious tolerance is a two-way street

I read with interest the article about Leonardo da Vinci High School embracing world hijab day by inviting students to wear hijabs. The purpose was to increase understanding and tolerance of others. No one can argue that we need more tolerance in our world today; simply read the news to see that is clearly the case.

With the hijab being clearly an outward religious statement made by Muslim women, I would hope these same women would be as open to traditions of other religions. These same students wearing a Jewish Star of David, a Catholic rosary, Buddhist mala beads or a tau cross would also foster that same spirit of understanding and diversity. All of these groups have and continue to experience discrimination.
