The West Seneca West boys hockey team earned the season sweep of its crosstown rival in an 8-3 win over West Seneca East at West Seneca Ice Rink Friday.
Billy Coughlin led the charge offensively with three goals and two assists, as the Indians improved to 12-5-1-1 overall and 9-4-1-1 against Division 2 foes. West beat East (12-3 in D-2) back on Jan. 15, 4-2.
West jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period on goals by Tyler Dunning, Matt Myers and Coughlin.
East’s Adam Stradtman and Tyler Arndt scored in the middle frame to make it 3-2 before Coughlin and Jake Fort extended West’s lead back to three, 5-2.
Danny Flynn scored for the Trojans 3:55 into the third, but Coughlin, Colin Deubell and Myers rounded out West’s dominating performance.
In other boys hockey action, St. Joe’s shut out Section X’s Massena, 4-0, to move to 14-5-5 overall this season. Goaltender Ben Weppner made 15 saves, and Jim Grable had a goal and an assist.
St. Mary’s of Lancaster put up a baker’s dozen on Niagara Falls in a 13-0 win. Samuel Dantonio had a hat trick and two assists, while Jordan Sypniewski scored twice and helped on two others.
The Lancers face Division 3-leading Sweet Home today at 4:30 p.m. at HarborCenter.
East Aurora’s Webster shines in the pool
Three swimmers won a pair of individual events at the Section VI Class B Championships held at Maryvale Friday evening.
East Aurora freshman Ezra Webster won the 200-yard freestyle in a state-cut time of 1:47.32 and also placed first in the 100 freestyle.
Webster had a hand in the Blue Devils winning the 200 and 400 freestyle relays as well. The 200 team consisted of Charles Morris, Thomas Zagrobelny, Nolan Thompson and Webster, while Calvin Roberts joined Webster, Thompson and Morris on the 400.
Morris, a junior, qualified for states in the 100 breaststroke with a winning time of 59.12 seconds.
Williamsville South junior Nick D’Arrigo won the 200 individual medley and the 500 free.
Junior Osasere Osula of the combined Dunkirk/Fredonia/Brocton/Cassadaga Valley team won the 50 free and 100 backstroke.
Albion’s Thomas Furmanski, Matt Kovaleski, Sam Sanchez and Carlitos Sanchez teamed up to win the 200 medley relay. Springville sophomore Wyatt Fuller won the 1-meter diving title. Grand Island’s Alexander Dodge won the 100 butterfly.
The Class A and Class C championships are today at Maryvale. Orchard Park (A) and Panama (C) look to defend their titles.
• Two-time defending Section VI girls hockey champion Frontier/Lake Shore/Orchard Park plays Section III’s Skaneateles at 1 p.m. in the NYSPHSAA semifinals held at SUNY Oswego.
It’s a rematch of last year’s state championship game, which Skaneateles won, 5-1.
The other semifinal features Section X’s Salmon River and Section VIII’s Beekmantown at 3 p.m. Winners advance to Sunday’s 1 p.m. final.
In last year’s semifinals, Skaneateles beat Potsdam, 5-1, and FLOP beat Beekmantown 5-1.
• In wrestling, the 68th Section VI Championships and 55th state qualifiers are held at two locations today. Large schools are at North Tonawanda starting at 10 a.m. Small schools are at Lake Shore starting at 8 a.m. Winners qualify for the 56th NYSPHSAA Championships Feb. 23-24 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Wrestling champions from the Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association are at Monsignor Farrell on Staten Island to compete at the Catholic High School Athletic Association Championships.
