DEC invites entries to essay contest

DEC Essay Contest for Hunting, Trapping Guide

The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) would like to hear about your first hunting or trapping story, to share with others through the 2018-19 Annual Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide. They’ve made it fun by making it into a friendly contest, with winners receiving a $50 gift certificate to Cabela’s. Submissions must be postmarked by March 15.

This is a perfect opportunity to share your first memorable experience afield or an outdoor adventure mentoring a new person hunting or trapping. It could be a son or grandson, daughter or granddaughter or a friend or next-door neighboring. There are three categories including Junior Youth Hunters/Trappers from grades 6 through 8, Senior Youth Hunters/Trappers grades 9 through 12 and Adult Hunters/Trappers ages 18 or older. They should be non-fiction and 500 words or less.

You can submit them electronically at (essay and photo) with Essay Contest in the subject line. Photos should be high resolution, at least 1 MB in size. If you are under 18 years old, you must also include a permission form that can be found on the DEC website at or by calling 518-402-8883.
