[BN] Blitz newsletter: Sean McDermott's Bills ranked 22nd in 'Aggressiveness Index'

Bills coach Sean McDermott promised to be an aggressive play-caller after being hired by the Bills: "If we're going down, we're going down guns blazing," he said at owners meetings a few months after replacing Rex Ryan, whose game management left much to be desired.

Bills fans did not see many guns blazing this season. McDermott was ranked 22nd on Football Outsiders' "Aggressiveness Index," which rates coaches on decisions when facing fourth and 1 or fourth and 2.

"In fairness," Mark Gaughan wrote, "the 2017 Bills season offered too small of a sample size to put McDermott in the Dick Jauron class of playing-not-to-lose Bills coaches."

Patriots players speak highly of new Bills OC Brian Daboll: New Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll came from Alabama and was with the Patriots before that. "He always kind of treated us like family," Patriots fullback James Develin told Vic Carucci. "He always said it was like we were his sons kind of thing. And I took that to heart."

Tre'Davious White unlikely to win AP defensive rookie honor, but has a good case: Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore appears to have the inside track to be named Defensive Rookie of the Year, but Tre'Davious White could certainly be in consideration. The News' Vic Carucci, who is a voter for the award, voted for White.

Scouting the Super Bowl matchup: The Eagles love to rush four and have a deep defensive line. Will they be able to fluster Tom Brady enough? Mark Gaughan's Matchup Watch looks at that question while Jay Skurski's Scouting Report breaks down the Eagles' passing attack vs. the Patriots' pass defense.

Speaking of Philly's D-line: How did the Giants beat the Patriots in two Super Bowls? "They did it primarily with a four-man pass rush, and by rotating defensive linemen," Jerry Sullivan wrote. "And that plays right to the strength of a formidable Eagles defense that will attempt to do the same thing on Sunday evening in Super Bowl LII."

Gronk cleared: Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski (concussion) has been cleared to play, but when asked if suffering a concussion has given him a new perspective on his dirty hit on Tre'Davious White, Gronkowski played dumb.

We'll get a good look at Darnold before the draft: USC QB Sam Darnold said he will throw at the NFL Scouting Combine.

New Bills song tackles the Patriots: Bills belter Jennie Fagen is back with "Just Not the Pats."

Steve Tasker's son works out for Jets: Luke Tasker, a wide receiver, reportedly worked out for the Jets this week. He is a three-time all-star in the Canadian league.
