As Brett Sardina scores more goals, Williamsville North wins more hockey games. It's that simple.
The defending state champions are off to a 14-0-4 start to the season, including 10-0-4 in the federation, and Sardina's individual numbers have played a huge part in the Spartans' team success.
Sardina followed up a two-goal effort in a 3-3 tie against Clarence last Thursday by setting the school's single-season scoring record Sunday with a goal in the second period during a 6-1 win against Bishop Timon-St. Jude.
That puts the senior at 23 goals in federation play with two more regular season games and the postseason still to go. Sardina entered the week as the only player in the fed with more than 20 goals, and his 14 assists were tied for second in Division 1. He has at least one point in every league game and a goal in all but two.
His record-setting performance makes Sardina our Prep Talk Male Athlete of the Week.

Coach Bob Rosen on Sardina: "I'm happy for him. He broke the Williamsville North record for goals scored and he is three goals away from tying the Fed record (26 by St. Joe's Cole Schneider). For the last two years he's been one of our top point producers. He was first team All-WNY last year. His ability to learn new offensive skills has come quickly to him. The combination of Brett Sardina and Andrew Bruno has been successful for our team, they feed off of each other. Andrew's a set up guy, Brett is a goal scorer. Last year, Brett was a key factor in our state championship win. ... He has a great nose for the net and plays well without the puck. Eight games ago we moved him back to center, which has increased his offensive looks and opportunities."
