Lackawanna councilors this week approved a revised policy on sexual harassment and discrimination cases.
The revised policy establishes a reporting procedure, defines the types of sexual harassment and addresses the reporting of workplace wrongdoing without the fear of retribution. In addition, the policy contains guidelines for city workers on the use of social media, both at the workplace and at home.
The updated policy came in response to a recent proposal from New York State seeking a uniform code of sexual harassment policies for state and local governments, said Antonio Savaglio, city attorney.
"Sexual harassment complaints have been in the news recently," Savaglio told the board. "[The new policy] basically deals with sexual harassment, discrimination and the use of social media. Lackawanna had a policy in place. We just beefed it up."
