The Buffalo Bills have hired former Houston Texans defensive backs coach John Butler, who has a long history with Sean McDermott, to fill the same job with them, the team announced.
The move was first reported by Alex Marvez of SportingNews.com.
Butler will replace Gill Byrd, who the Bills fired after only one season, The Buffalo News' Tim Graham reported Monday night.
Butler, who spent the previous four seasons with the Texans, attended LaSalle High School in Pennsylvania, and he and McDermott were football teammates there. Butler previously spent two seasons, including one as defensive coordinator at Penn State but joined Nittany Lions coach Bill O'Brien in Houston.
This is the second change to the Bills' coaching staff in as many days. Monday, the team announced that defensive line coach Mike Waufle was retiring after only one season with the Bills and 20 seasons in the NFL. Bill Teerlinck was promoted from assistant defensive line coach to replace Waufle.
