Lackwanna will purchase a snowplow for $195,000 from the Town of Hornellsville to help it get through a winter that saw three of its seven plows break down.
"Hornellsville?" asked City Council President Keith Lewis on Monday, as lawmakers approved the purchase. "Where is Hornellsville?"
"Near Hornell?" answered Anthony DeSantis, commissioner of the Department of Public Works.
The snow and ice season has been tough on DeSantis, who warned residents in November to be patient with snow removal until his relatively green crew got some storms under their snowbelts. DeSantis did not count on a flurry of snow plow breakdowns that forced the city to borrow snow removal equipment from other municipalities.
"We've ignored that department for some years," said Lewis. "Now it's time to catch up."
