Remember when there was almost an Ikea at Canalside?
When that idea went the way of the Bass Pros of the world, many Western New Yorkers thought they'd be trudging across the border to Canada for the foreseeable future to get their fix of Swedish home goods.
Well, the world's largest furniture retailer may finally be coming to Western New York — Henrietta, specifically.
According to the Democrat & Chronicle, Ikea is scouting sites in the Rochester suburb. Henrietta has large shopping areas already and Ikea has been looking at several parcels. The company has been looking to expand its U.S. footprint so surely a store in Western New York would help that expansion.
In 2010 when an Ikea store was pitched for Canalside, a company spokesman said Ikea was only looking at markets of 2 million people or more. Apparently that has changed since the greater Rochester area has just over a million people, according to the 2010 census.
Just so you don't have to Google it yourself, it takes an hour and 13 minutes to get from Canalside to Henrietta. The closest full-service Ikea store to Buffalo is in Burlington, Ontario, a 1 1/2 hour drive, depending on the Peace Bridge traffic.
Is it worth holding out hope that Ikea may soon be scouting sites in the Buffalo area?
