Letters: Our community is enriched by hardworking immigrants

Our community is enriched by hardworking immigrants

As an English as a Second Language tutor working with Literacy Volunteers to help immigrants, mostly from African nations, on Buffalo’s Lower West Side to speak and read English, I was appalled by the president’s bigoted, offensive and ignorant attack on their homelands.

I have interacted with these loving, gracious and hardworking members of our community for five years and despite having to leave their countries under sometimes unimaginable circumstances, they are proud of their heritage, miss family members left behind and eager to share pictures and stories of their culture. I have been to their homes and enjoyed delicious food from their cultures, which they were proud to share with us.

We are a better community for what these people bring to us and they deserve our thanks and respect, rather than having their homelands denigrated with such crude and uninformed statements.
