The George F. Lamm American Legion Post No. 622 in Amherst has received permission to erect a 13-foot digital message sign, but members of the town Zoning Board of Appeals rejected the organization's request to display on the sign ads from outside businesses.
The 400-member post at 962 Wehrle Drive wanted to erect the sign to attract new members and increase revenues from its bingo games. The post needed area variances to put up the $25,000 sign because it is within 500 feet of a residential district and because off-premises advertising isn't allowed in its zoning district.
The Zoning Board voted 3-0 both to approve the sign and to reinforce that only ads for post activities are permitted. Board member Carrie Kahn abstained from both votes and Chairman John Radens recused himself as a post member. The board had tabled the matter at its December meeting.
