The franchisee behind the area's only Sonic restaurant franchise paid $1.2 million to acquire the land in Cheektowaga on which its restaurant already sits.
Meanwhile, negotiations are continuing to finalize lease terms for a second restaurant, to be constructed on a concrete pad outparcel in front of the Target store at Eastview Plaza on Transit Road in East Amherst. As with the current site, the new $2 million restaurant will have indoor seating, 12 exterior stalls and a double drive-thru. It's expected to open this summer, with about 40 employees.
Sonic Buffalo bought the Cheektowaga site at 3601 Union Road from Acquest Development's Union Road Plaza LLC.
That ensures that the local franchisee not only owns the business and the building but also the dirt on which it was built for $1.5 million and operated under a land lease, said William M. McGowan, Sonic Buffalo's chief financial officer.
The franchisee also plans a third location in Erie, Pa., McGowan said.
