Prep Talk Female Athlete of the Week: Danielle Haskell, Franklinville girls basketball

Franklinville's Danielle Haskell may lead Section VI in scoring at 26.5 points per game, but her game is so much more than just throwing up (and often making) three-point bombs from NBA range.

The sophomore sensation showed that last week when she took her act on the road three times and helped the Panthers remain undefeated with three wins.

Haskell combined for 48 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals in blowout wins at North Collins and Cattaraugus/Little Valley but saved her best performance for Saturday. She scored a season-high 35 points, including eight three-pointers, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and added three steals as the No. 1 small school in Western New York topped No. 7 large school East Aurora, 77-71.

That makes "Smudge," as those close to Dani call her, our Prep Talk Female Athlete of the Week.

Year: Sophomore.

Position: Guard.

Number: 22.

Height: 5-foot-8.

Coach Allan Dunlap on Haskell: "I have coached all levels, both boys and girls, for 20 years and have never coached or coached against a better player than Dani Haskell. She can do it all. She is a great shooter with unlimited range. She can consistently hit shots from 30-plus feet. She is explosive with the dribble and able to go left or right equally as well. She is a tremendous finisher of the basketball. What often gets overlooked is her ability to play defense. Her ability to lock down opposing teams' best players and the way she anticipates is incredible.

"I heard a coach say earlier this season that she is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers. Her basketball IQ is off the charts. She possesses a work ethic that is unmatched, and she consistently makes all around her better. Dani is a fantastic kid who always gets the best out of herself and pushes those around her to rise to a higher level. Her fun personality and kindness for others draws people to her. She is just an outstanding player, teammate and person who simply makes Franklinville a better place."

How has your season gone so far?: So far it’s been great. We are undefeated with wins over Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s and East Aurora.

Highlight of athletic career so far: Probably scoring my 1,000th point last year with most of my family there.

Favorite thing about my sport: I love playing with our team. It is my sister's last year and some of my best friends are on the team and none of us care who gets the points or stats.

Favorite teammate: My sister, Allyson. She really pushes me to be the best I can be.

Toughest opponent: East Aurora and Sacred Heart. They are both very good teams with great players like Emma Brinker and the Ryan sisters.

WNY athlete I looked up to: My sister Ally, who works harder than anyone I know and is going to St. Bonaventure in the fall to play softball.

Pro/college athlete I admire now: LeBron James, because he is the best at what he does and had to work so hard to get there.

Favorite school subjects: Math.

What’s ahead (athletics and/or academics): Hopefully I would like to continue my basketball career at a college with a major in academics that I decide on.
