Caleb E. Bell Jr., who started a fire in his mother's home less than three weeks after she was found dead following another blaze there, was sentenced Monday to five to 10 years in state prison.
Bell, 35, said he was planning suicide when he poured gasoline in the house at 605 E. High St., Lockport, on Nov. 8, 2016, and lit it.
His mother, Holly A. Seiler, 54, was found dead in a second-floor bedroom after the first fire Oct. 20, 2016. Defense attorney Brian J. Hutchison said Bell blamed himself for being unable to rescue her that morning.
"This was a grief-stricken son," Hutchison said.
Niagara County Assistant District Attorney Doreen M. Hoffmann said Seiler's death remains the subject of "an open and active investigation."
