The Niagara County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of K-9 dog EJ.
Two-year-old EJ, a German shepherd, was found unresponsive in his kennel Friday by his partner and handler Deputy Richard Bull. Preliminary findings suggest EJ died from a medical condition known as gastric torsion of the stomach, according to the Sheriff's Office. An autopsy has been scheduled.
EJ and Bull were state certified in areas ranging from criminal apprehension to advanced narcotics detection. They were responsible for several successful tracks, the recovery of evidence and the discovery of illegal narcotics. They also conducted demonstrations at events, including the Niagara County Fair.
EJ was named after Lance Cpl. Eric James Orlowski, who was killed in action in March 2003 during Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq.
