A Wheatfield woman is out $1,550 after being victimized in a check fraud scheme originating on the online website Craigslist, police said.
The woman, who lives on Arnold Drive, was selling a piece of furniture for $295 on the website and was contacted by a prospective purchaser on Jan 10, according to reports. The suspect forwarded the woman a check for $1,550, instructing her to keep the money for her item, plus $60 for a "processing fee," and to forward the rest to a man in Virginia. The woman waited a couple of days for the check to clear her bank before proceeding, according to reports.
She was later contacted by the suspect, who said he was canceling the furniture purchase and requested his $295 back. The bank later notified the woman that the original check had bounced and that she would be responsible for the full $1,550. An investigation into the incident is continuing.
