Planning Board starts reviews of waterfront condo, Cooperage projects

The Buffalo Planning Board Tuesday evening agreed to take the lead in state-mandated environmental reviews for a proposed Ciminelli Real Estate Corp. condominium and townhouse project at 240-260 Lakefront Blvd. and for Ellicott Development Co.'s proposed redevelopment of the facility at 55-59 Chicago St., known as the Cooperage.

Ciminelli plans to construct seven townhomes and four separate condo buildings with six units in each, for a total of 31 for-sale residences. All the buildings would be three stories in height.

Proposed West End townhomes by Ciminelli Real Estate Corp. for 240-260 Lakefront Blvd.

Ellicott, owned by Carl and William Paladino, wants to demolish most of the crumbling former E&B Holmes Machinery manufacturing complex, retain and renovate another building for a brewery, and erect two new mixed-use buildings on either side while retaining an interior courtyard. One new building would include apartments, a distillery and a retail space, while the other would be a multi-use gymnasium.

Both projects will come back for public hearings in late February after a 30-day review period.
