A man who beat the mother of his children with two baseball bats and threatened her with a sword was sentenced Tuesday to two to four years in state prison.
Jason E. Evrard, 33, of Quain Place, Town of Niagara, was living with the woman on Lockport Road in Wheatfield at the time of the assault May 26.
"I was pleasantly surprised when I saw how genuine Mr. Evrard's remorse was," defense attorney Dominic Saraceno said.
Evrard, who has 14 criminal convictions, is a repeat felon because of a 2012 animal cruelty conviction for slamming his grandmother's dog to the floor and fracturing its pelvis.
"There's some people who say when you kill animals, that's what you'll do to human beings," State Supreme Court Justice Richard C. Kloch Sr. commented.
