Six individuals were airlifted to safety Sunday afternoon from a floating patch of ice on Lake Erie, after the ice broke off from the shore at Sturgeon Point Marina while they were ice fishing.
A Town of Evans police dispatcher said the Erie County Sheriff's Office Air One helicopter was called to the scene at about 1:05 p.m. to help rescue the anglers, who had gone about 150 yards out on the ice when it broke away. The helicopter made three trips to bring them to safety.
The Highland Hose, North Evans and Lake Erie Beach fire companies, along with AMR Medical Services, responded as well. The individuals, all in their 20s and 30s, were dressed for the elements, were not hurt and refused emergency medical treatment, deputies said.
