Duck hunters rescued after kayak overturns on Mud Creek

Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies and volunteer firefighters rescued two duck hunters whose kayak overturned Saturday morning in Mud Creek in Lockport.

Another duck hunter called 911 at 10:20 a.m. to report his friends had fallen into the creek when their kayak was turned sideways by the current, hit ice and overturned. Neither of the men, identified as Ryan Chamberlain, 20, and Michael Wardzinski, 19, both of Lockport, was wearing a life vest.

Deputies and members of the Rapids Volunteer Fire Company responded to the area of 7000 Rapids Road within minutes, the Sheriff’s Office reported, and using a rescue rope, were able to pull the two men to safety. The two men, who were in the water about a half-hour, were treated at the scene and taken to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital for treatment for exposure, authorities said.

The air temperature was about 10 degrees at the time of the accident.
