Council seeks design changes for Ascension Church housing addition

The Episcopal Diocese of Western New York didn't get its wish, but its $7 million proposal to turn the historic Ascension Church into affordable housing units still has life.

The Diocese appealed to the Buffalo Common Council to reverse a project denial made by the city's Preservation Board to transform the vacant church at 16 Linwood Ave. and 67 North St. into 28 apartments for people 55 and older with fixed incomes that are 50 to 60 percent of the area median income.

Instead, earlier this week Council Members directed developers to go back and work with the board on design concerns related to windows and the foundation of the proposed addition only.

The proposal has been approved by the city's Planning Board, Zoning Board of Appeals as well as the National Park Service and the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for tax credits.
