Amherst supervisor opposes plan to redefine 'family' in town code

Amherst Supervisor Brian J. Kulpa opposes a plan to redefine "family" in the town and said there are better ways to tackle the housing problems that spurred the proposed code change.

Kulpa said he doesn't want the Town Board to bring the zoning code change up for a vote, effectively killing the proposal by leaving it in limbo. He said he believes other board members share his concerns.

The Town Board on Jan. 2 held a public hearing on redefining "family" in the town zoning code to make it easier to restrict homes where large groups of students and other renters live, particularly in Eggertsville. The town Planning Board had previously recommended approval.

But Town Board members and the public expressed doubts. Kulpa said the town can use existing laws and codes to address the problems.
