Owner urged to fix Carlton Street building that adds to city's 'charm and character'

Preservationists and East Side residents Wednesday called on the owner of a circa 1876 building to make immediate repairs before the building is lost to demolition.

Borderland Advantage purchased the building at 238 Carlton St. in 2017 after a fire damaged the back of the building. The owner has failed to stabilize the building, and the city is threatening emergency demolition if not done quickly.

"What a shame that the charm and character that Buffalo is known for is to be demolished in this fashion," said Sydney Brown of the Black Chamber of Commerce.

Preservation Buffalo Niagara is pursuing landmarking the building.

The public call to save the building occurred about eight hours after a fire spread through another historic East Side building at 68 Sycamore St., built in 1843.
