Amherst has hired a new police officer who will start training at Erie County's Central Police Services training academy on Jan. 22.
The Town Board voted last week to appoint Qusayye Fahmawi to the town's Police Department at a starting salary of $58,092. The appointment takes effect Monday, and he begins his training at the academy one week later. That should take until July, and then Fahmawi will have about 10 weeks of field training, said Assistant Police Chief Charles Cohen.
The resolution approved by the Town Board did not include Fahmawi's name, but Cohen provided it afterward at the request of The Buffalo News.
Fahmawi, of Amherst, fills a vacancy in the department created by a retirement. His hiring brings the department up to 153 sworn officers, Cohen said.
