Amherst reschedules kick-off party for town's 200th birthday

Amherst waited 200 years for its bicentennial celebration, so it probably can wait two more weeks.

The town had planned to start the party on Jan. 2, but the event was canceled because of severe winter weather. The rescheduled event will take place at 11 a.m. Jan. 19 in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Building, 5583 Main St., Williamsville.

The celebration will include a gigantic birthday cake, the unveiling of Amherst's bicentennial logo and proclamations from officials and municipalities throughout the world. Bicentennial co-chairmen Herbert Schmidt and Dave Sherman will offer greetings.

The town received 200 proclamations, including some from municipalities that share the same name in Nova Scotia, Wisconsin, Ohio and Massachusetts. Later celebrations will include a parade, historic walking tours, a slogan contest and a Bicentennial Ball. For more information, visit
