Batavia couple injured in domestic standoff, fire

Charges are pending after a Batavia man barricaded himself in his apartment with his girlfriend Sunday morning – an incident followed by a fire in the apartment.

Batavia Police said Eddie L. Miles Jr. threatened to shoot officers arriving at the Washington Avenue dwelling shortly before 9 a.m. Police evacuated the neighboring houses and instructed others nearby to shelter in place. A few minutes later, police saw smoke coming from the apartment through a broken front window.

The woman climbed to the roof and was rescued with a ladder. Miles later headed for a rear roof and after about 10 minutes, which included more threats of gunfire, he climbed down a ladder and was taken into custody. He and the woman were treated at United Memorial Medical Center.

Police did not say if a weapon was recovered.
