Team USA scored three of its four first-period goals on the power play and went on to a 5-3 victory over Russia on Sunday in the preliminary round play of the IIHF Women's U18 championships at the Ice Palace in Dmitrov, Russia, near Moscow.
Taylor Heis, Brittany Curl and Margaret Nichols scored on the power play in the first 13:45 of the game and Hanna Bilka added the fourth goal with 4:01 left in the period.
Curl scored for the U.S. to make it 5-1 in the second. Russia scored twice in the third. The Americans were 4 for 8 on the power play and killed off eight of 11 advantages the Russians had.
Buffalo native Katelyn Knoll, who attends Nichols School, had one minor penalty and one shot on goal for the USA.
Defending champion USA will face Canada in its final preliminary round game on Tuesday.
