Sweden's goalie Anna Amholt frustrated the U.S. with 58 saves, but the defending champion Americans broke through with an overtime goal by 15-year-old Makenna Webster in overtime to defeat the Swedes, 2-1, on the first day of the IIHF Under 18 women's championships in Moscow. Abigail Murphy, also 15, gave the U.S the lead with a goal with 14 seconds left in the first period. Lina Ljungblom tied in the third period on a power play goal.
Katelyn Knoll, a 17-year-old Nichols student from Buffalo skated on the first line sent out by U.S. coach Joel Johnson. She had two shots on goal.
Amholt had 27 saves in the third period alone. Lindsay Reed had 13 saves for the U.S.
