Jasmine L. Mendez had previously obtained an order of protection against her former boyfriend, but still regularly asked him to watch her infant son, according to Buffalo police.
Now her 7-month-old lies brain-dead in Oishei Children’s Hospital, and former boyfriend, Frank Redd, has been charged with second degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless assault.
“If the child takes a turn for the worse, those charges could be updated,” said Capt. Jeff Rinaldo, spokesman for the Buffalo Police Department.
It appears the baby was not injured in any single incident but in a series of assaults over a four-month period, Rinaldo said.
A tipster provided the information about Redd, 26, who was arrested early Saturday morning and has no permanent address, Rinaldo said. Redd is not the father of the infant.
Mendez is also 26, and was charged with misdemeanor child endangerment early Friday.
Police are not disclosing Mendez’s address nor the name of her son, Rinaldo said. But police noted Mendez brought the child to the hospital after he had been left in the care of someone else.
Child Protective Services was also notified, according to a police report.
The infant remains in critical condition in the the intensive care unit at Oishei Children’s Hospital. An entire side of the boy’s brain died due to inadequate blood supply, according to a police report.
Mendez pleaded not guilty at her arraignment in Buffalo City Court on Friday morning, where bail was set at $25,000 cash or property. She is being held in the Erie County Holding Center.
