John Michael Fitzgerald, a Lockport attorney for almost 40 years, died Sunday in Niagara Hospice House, Lockport, after an illness. He was 71.
Born in Lockport, he was a 1964 graduate of Lockport High School, earned a bachelor’s degree from Niagara University in 1968 and completed his juris doctor degree at the University at Buffalo Law School in 1972.
He was associated with the firm of Pusateri & Fitzgerald in downtown Lockport and specialized in real estate and matrimonial law and estate planning. He retired in 2010.
He also served for more than 20 years as an assistant Niagara County attorney.
Devoted to his family, he enjoyed golf and was a member of the Lockport Town and Country Club. He also was a member of Kiwanis Club of Lockport.
His wife of 40 years, the former Ellen Martin, a Lockport elementary school teacher, died in 2010.
Survivors include a son, Michael; a daughter, Katherine "Katy" Bell; two sisters, Joanne Roberts and Maureen Merchant; a brother, Daniel; a step-sister, Sandra Harrington; a step-brother, James N. Brewer; and four grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 168 Chestnut St., Lockport.
