Buffalo mother charged after bringing brain-dead infant to hospital

A Buffalo mother brought her brain-dead 7-month-old son to Oishei Children's Hospital and told police she had left the boy in the care of a homeless man, according to a police report.

Police charged the mother, identified as Jasmine L. Mendez, 26, with misdemeanor child endangerment at 12:36 a.m. Friday.

No one else has yet been charged, but police said they are continuing to investigate. Child Protective Services was also notified, according to a police report.

The infant is in the intensive care unit at Oishei Children's Hospital. The right side of the boy's brain died due to inadequate blood supply, according to a police report.

Mendez pleaded not guilty at her arraignment in Buffalo City Court on Friday morning, where bail was set at $25,000 cash or property. She was being held in the Erie County Holding Center.
