Trump takes us beyond the point of no return
Democrats delude themselves if they think retaking Congress will solve the problems of this nation. Even if every congressional Republican up for re-election were to lose, and even if every congressional Democrat were to retain his seat – the odds of all of that happening are about the same as the odds of ever again electing a thoughtful, caring, articulate president – no American adult alive today will ever live to see the day when we, as a nation, support policies for ourselves and for our planet that bear any resemblance to our self-image as decent and fair-minded human beings.
The policies perpetrated on Americans and on the world by President Trump’s federal judges and Cabinet appointees (and rubber-stamped by this Republican Congress) will outlive us all. Even if we were to begin the long slog back to decency in November, modern history tells us that an electorate as willfully ignorant and as easily misled as ours will soon chase after some new charlatan, and the pendulum will soon swing back to somewhere near where it is now.
We have endured civil, world, Korean, Vietnam and Cold Wars, McCarthyism, Watergate, Iran-Contra and a succession of elected fools and hypocrites over the course of our history, but today we have gone beyond the point of no return. Our delusional self-image is the laughingstock of those humans on the planet who are not blessed enough to be Americans. Happy New Year.
