Dwon Daniels, one of Niagara County's four coroners, said Wednesday he is resigning, effective Jan. 15, but he hasn't ruled out running for the District 1 post again in the November election.
Daniels, a Niagara Falls firefighter, injured his knee exiting a fire truck last April. He said he underwent surgery in September, but recovery is taking longer than expected, so he's stepping down.
"It's not fair to the other coroners to have them keep coming to Niagara Falls," Daniels said. But he might run this fall if his knee is better.
"I love the job," he said.
The County Legislature chose a search committee Tuesday to fill the $25,500-a-year post for the rest of 2018. Legislature Clerk Mary Jo Tamburlin said applications will be taken until late January.
